What is an EICR?

The easiest way to explain what an EICR is to think of it as an MOT on your property’s electrics. It’s essentially an in-depth test on all the electrics in your properties and looks at potential risks and hazards. Although it may not be as often as an MOT on your car, It is a legal requirement to renew your EICR every five years if you’re renting your property out.

Furthermore, if you have just purchased a house, it’s normally a good idea to have an EICR completed just to make sure all your electrics are safe. As a homeowner it’s recommended to have an EICR completed every 10 years to ensure your electrics line up with current safety regulations.

What happens if something isn’t quite right?

If the EICR detects some damage or cause for concern the test will immediately highlight this and one of our skilled electricians will talk you through what the issue is and how it can fixed. You can then make the decision to arrange for this to be sorted by us.

To make it easier for people to understand the test is graded using codes. So, for example if a code C1 or 2 is flagged up, this will mean action to fix the issue is required urgently. Leading on from this a C3 code will indicate something that could cause issues in the future. It is recommended these are still fixed so no further damage or issues occur.

Why do I need an EICR?

It is extremely important to have an EICR electrical test carried out for many reasons. The most important is knowing that your home is safe for your family or tenants or if you’re a business owner your employees. Old and flawed wiring is a major cause for electrical fires within a property. So especially if you know the wiring and electrics are very old in your property it’s well worth getting an EICR completed just to be on the safe side and prevent any fires that could be caused.
