Electrical safety at Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, Paradigm Electrical Solutions are here to give you some tips to keep safe when celebrating. When people think of Christmas, they think lights, the tree and Christmas dinner. All of these things are great but there are some dangers involved like most things.

Christmas lights – Putting up your Christmas lights is the best way to start feeling festive, however we recommend just giving your lights a quick check for damaged wiring before plugging in. Another important thing is never leaving your Christmas lights plugged in overnight or when you leave the house. As with any light source, they can overheat and become a fire hazard. We also suggest making sure you are using the right lights for indoor and outdoor use. One last thing is to make sure you aren’t overloading your extension leads with lots of different Christmas lights, this may indicate you are in need to some extra sockets.

Christmas trees – Many people opt for a real tree at Christmas, while they look and smell great, they do pose a higher risk of catching fire so make sure they are not placed near any heat source and are regularly being watered. You should also use LED Christmas lights as they have a much lower heat output reducing the risk of fire massively.

Extension leads – Extension leads are a great option at Christmas as many of our homes won’t have enough sockets to power all the additional lights. However, they can be dangerous if not used correctly. They should not be overused; a good way of checking is using an online socket overload calculator to double check. Arguably the most important thing this Christmas regarding electrical safety is carefully checking your extension lead for any damage, it’s just not worth the risk of using a faulty extension lead.

Paradigm Electrical Solutions would like to thank our customers for their continued support this year and wish you a very (safe) Merry Christmas & new year!
