RCD's explained

It’s surprising that many people hear the letters ‘RCD’ but have no idea what it really is or why they are used.

Residual Current Devices (RCD’s) are a life saving device fitted within your electrical system. They provide protection against electric shocks from live wires and even decrease the risk of power surges causing electrical fires.

What is an RCD & how does it work?

An RCD is a small device fitted within your consumer unit. They use fault detection and completely shut off the faulty circuit. The RCD carefully monitors the electricity current flowing within the individual circuits and if it notices any changes, specifically if the current is going somewhere it shouldn't the RCD will activate automatically shutting off power supply. RCD’s are highly reliable and tested regularly will greatly reduce the risk of death and injury from live wires and faulty circuits. There are a few variations of RCD’s, these include:

  • Type AC: ‘AC’ RCD’s are used to detect alternating currents. They can be used in most settings and are generally the most common type.
  • Type A: ‘A’ RCD’s are used for single phase class 1 electronic loads, these are more common in commercial properties.

Socket RCD protection

For sockets used outdoors or in vulnerable areas of the home like bathrooms, sockets should be fitted with additional RCD protection. Sockets within these areas come into contact with more dangers meaning the additional protection is a must.

Testing RCD’s

Testing your RCD is highly recommended, after all it could save your life. RCD testing should be carried out every 12 months to confirm full protection and provide optimal safety. If you need any help or assistance regarding RCD testing just let us know, our friendly team is always happy to help out.

UK safety standards

From 2008 UK electrical safety standards require “virtually all circuits in new or rewired homes to be provided with additional protection by means of an RCD”. If you have a new build it's likely to already have adequate safety protection installed however properties built before 2008 are at risk.
